Our Visit

Today, I visited a Korean restaurant, ‘Sungnye Dodam’, located near Seoul City Hall Station.

It's just a 1-minute walk from City Hall Station, making it a great place to visit after exploring major tourist attractions like Sungnyemun (Namdaemun), Deoksugung, and Myeong-dong.

As it is already a popular restaurant well-known among nearby office workers and domestic and international tourists,

I really liked that you could check the menu outside the restaurant in advance, even when there was a wait or during break time.

Even first-time visitors can take their time looking at the menu and deciding, so it felt even more convenient.

When you go inside, the wood-toned interior and the soft yellow lighting create an even warmer and cozier atmosphere.

There were plenty of seats available even on the first floor, and there were also stairs going up to the second floor, so it could accommodate even more people.

If you go up the stairs to the second floor, there is a restroom right there, so it's convenient to use :)

The second floor also had seating arranged on a similar scale as the first floor,

Thanks to the seat with a full-length window, I especially liked being able to enjoy a meal leisurely while looking outside in a more open and airy atmosphere.

This is the menu of 'Sungnye Dodam',

Since it is also written in foreign languages, it seemed that even foreigners visiting for the first time could place an order without difficulty.

Today, we ordered 'Samgyeopsal Bossam', 'Green Onion Pancake', 'Spicy Whelk Salad', 'Grilled Pollack Roe', and 'Stir-fried Octopus' with 'Thin Wheat Noodles'.

I was really satisfied because I could enjoy a variety of Korean dishes all in one place :)

Another thing I was satisfied with was the wide variety of makgeolli!

You can personally choose popular traditional makgeolli in Korea, which is a highlight I especially recommend for those who want to enjoy traditional liquor with Korean food.

Makgeolli is a traditional Korean fermented liquor made from rice, characterized by its smooth carbonation and slightly sweet taste.

If you eat it together with greasy foods, jeon, or bossam, you'll experience a refreshing harmony that cleanses your palate, so I definitely recommend you try it at least once!

All the food you ordered is here!

The colors and visuals were so amazing that just looking at them made my mouth water.

The neatly set table made me feel like I was truly being served homemade Korean food.

Now, let's get started and introduce each one while tasting them :)

First, let me introduce the signature dish, 'Samgyeopsal Bossam.'

The bossam at 'Sungnye Dodam' is made by gently boiling freshly delivered pork every morning to ensure it's tender and free of any unpleasant smell.

In particular, 'Sungnye Dodam' bossam comes with flavorful aged kimchi, special sauce, and freshly made dried radish strips and seasoned chives prepared daily.

There are two types of sauces you can dip boiled pork in,

One is salted shrimp, which is inseparable from boiled pork, and the other is a special sauce developed right here!

This special sauce is a delicacy you can only taste here and is loved by many people.

The tangy zest and subtle sweetness of the special sauce blend harmoniously, enhancing the flavor of the boiled pork even more.

This time, I wrapped boiled pork in aged kimchi in bite-sized pieces, and tried it with salted shrimp and seasoned chives.

The tanginess of aged kimchi and the tenderness of boiled pork blend together in your mouth, while the savory saltiness of salted shrimp and the fresh crunch of seasoned chives harmonize perfectly, creating a truly fantastic taste experience!

The combination of spicy and sweet dried radish and bossam also blended well, so I could enjoy it without getting tired of it.

If you pair it with various side dishes, you can enjoy a variety of flavors with just one menu item, making it even more satisfying :)

This time, I'll introduce stir-fried octopus.

Stir-fried octopus is one of the most popular spicy seafood dishes in Korea,

This dish is made by stir-frying finely chopped octopus in a spicy and sweet gochujang sauce, featuring a chewy texture and a rich, flavorful seasoning.

The stir-fried octopus at 'Sungnye Dodam' is made with chewy octopus that's well-marinated in a special sauce, so the moment you take a bite, your mouth is filled with a spicy and savory flavor!

Especially, the charcoal-grilled flavor added to the seasoning makes the taste even richer, and the fragrant perilla leaf on top enhances its unique aroma.

You can taste a slight sweetness within the spiciness, making it a clean and enjoyable dish that's not too overwhelming.

We also ordered extra somyeon noodles to mix and eat with the stir-fried octopus.

If you mix the noodles well with the stir-fried octopus sauce and eat them together with the octopus, the sauce spreads throughout your mouth and the chewy octopus and springy noodles create a perfect harmony.

Because the seasoning wasn't too strong, it tasted much smoother and richer when eaten with somyeon noodles.

This time, I added a bowl of rice and mixed it with the stir-fried octopus sauce.

The spicy seasoning is absorbed into every grain of rice, and when eaten together with the chewy texture of the octopus, it makes for a truly hearty and satisfying meal.

If you mix rice with the stir-fried octopus and eat it together with the young radish kimchi, perilla leaf salad, and pickled garlic that come as basic side dishes,

As each ingredient blends together without being salty and maintains a clean balance, you can truly experience the harmony of Korean-style spicy, tangy, and savory flavors filling your mouth.

Especially the refreshing taste of young radish kimchi, the fragrant flavor of seasoned perilla leaves, and the tangy taste of pickled garlic make the spicy stir-fried octopus even more flavorful—it's a combination you keep reaching for :)

If you want to enjoy Korean-style spicy dishes in a different way, I highly recommend adding somyeon noodles or rice and mixing them in!

This time it's 'Green Onion Pancake'!

A pancake generously filled with green onions, with a crispy outside and a moist inside—the texture was truly impressive.

When you take a bite, the sweet aroma of green onion spreads, blending with the savory batter to create a light yet flavorful taste.

It’s grilled cleanly without being greasy, so it goes really well with makgeolli, and it’s a traditional Korean dish that foreigners can also enjoy without any worries :)

If you cut it into bite-sized pieces and dip it in the special green onion pancake soy sauce,

The savory flavor of soy sauce enhances the taste, making it richer and much more delicious!

The makgeolli we ordered today is 'Baekryeon Saeng Makgeolli,' which is characterized by a fresh herbal aroma and a clean, smooth finish!

In particular, this makgeolli was even selected as the 'Cheong Wa Dae banquet wine,' so you could trust its quality and taste.

With just the right amount of carbonation and a refreshing taste, it wasn’t heavy and paired well with jeon and Korean cuisine.

I think even foreigners who are trying makgeolli for the first time can enjoy it without any burden!

You can drink makgeolli by pouring it into a special tin cup,

When pouring, you can see the bubbles in the makgeolli popping, which makes it fun to watch!

This time, it's 'Baekgolbaengi-muchim',

Golgbaengi is one of the popular seafoods enjoyed in Korea, and it is a type of shellfish similar to 'sora'.

It features a firm texture and a mild yet slightly chewy taste.

Usually in Korea, whelks are often mixed with red pepper powder for a spicy flavor,

The 'Baekgolbaengyi Muchim' at 'Sungnye Dodam' is made with a soy sauce-based, tangy and savory seasoning, so even those who can't handle spicy food can enjoy it without worry.

Especially with the special sauce made from 'Sungnye Dodam's' secret recipe and fresh vegetables,

plus thin wheat noodles all combined to create a special flavor that will stimulate your appetite, we highly recommend you give it a try!

The last menu item is 'Grilled Pollack Roe'.

If you enjoy savory and nutty pollack roe with cucumber and onion, the harmony of textures is outstanding, and your mouth will be filled with freshness and umami.

It's a popular dish that many people love, perfect not only as a side dish for rice but also as a bar snack!

So, today I finished a delicious Korean meal at 'Sungnye Dodam',

Thanks to the heartfelt dishes and warm atmosphere, I was able to truly experience the taste and sentiment of Korea.

If you want to comfortably enjoy traditional Korean food in the heart of Seoul, 'Sungnye Dodam' will be a choice you won't regret!
